Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol Issue 20:
Cautionary Tales

Issue Summary

Interlude: A priest wanders a city dump hoping for a small sign that God is still alive. It starts raining fish, and while he ponders the significance, a refrigerator drops on his head.

Chief and Joshua visit Rebis and find that s/he's nothing like their old friend Larry (except for the fact that s/he emits radiation and is covered in gauze). Not only is Rebis a hermaphrodite, but s/he also has a really creepy personality (which makes one think that the Uroboros is running the show). "Nothing pure... My race is mixed, my sex is mixed, I am woman and man and light with darkness, mixed...I am nothing special." Rebis takes off hir (note my proper use of mixed gender cuz I am smart and all) robe and starts admiring hir body, but none of this craziness deters Chief from asking Rebis to join the new Doom Patrol.

Dr. Magnus is pleased to see that Cliff and Crazy Jane have taken an interest in each other. I swear to god it sounds like he's trying to set them up together. Cliff just figures that helping her organize her multiple personalities and powers is better than sitting around in self-pity all day. Dr. Magnus decides to build Cliff a new body, and he exits stage left.

Cliff goes for a walk around the asylum with Jane, and she introduces him to Driver 8 who monitors the thoughts and feelings of her other personalities. They all agree that they like Cliff very much. Awwww. Unfortunately their tender moment is interrupted by an inmate jumping to his death right in front of them. He makes a snip-snip motion with his hands before dying.

Interlude: A man riding a subway is disturbed to find that the subway terminal architecture is now made entirely out of the bones of some really large animal. We get our first glimpse of the Scissormen as they enter the train, presumably ready to commit some unspeakable nastiness.

Cliff is up late writing, when Crazy Jane starts flipping out; yelling and bleeding all over herself (she's quite the odd one). Scissormen have invaded the asylum. They've cut people up and transformed them into paper-thin Hollow Children. Cliff is stupefied, and where most super-heroes would start bashing heads; he just gapes in horror.

Interludes: Around the world, shit is going down. In Stuttgart all the clocks chime fifteen; in Reykjavik shadows come to life and kill people, in London a wax figure of John Lennon bleeds from stigmata. Yup, the Scissormen have arrived.
