Well jeeze…  Seems like a lot of the actors and entertainers I really like seem to be kicking the bucket lately.  What’s with that?  This time it’s Ossie Davis.

Okay, so I’m guess most folks in the under 20 crowd probably don’t know who he was but maybe saw him in Bubba Ho-tep as an elderly black dude who thought he was JFK (by the way, great movie, go see it) or in The Stand as the Judge (his wife costarred as Mother Abigaile Freemantle!).  Some folks may know him for roles in Do The Right Thing as Da Mayor or in roles in several other Lee films.

Older folks know him for more important roles, not just in movies but in real life.  He was a civil rights leader, an important figure who helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington for example.  He and his wife Ruby Dee were influentual black actors on stage and screen in a time when it was hard to get a role other than as a maid or butler.

Well not to go into a history lesson too much, he was an interesting person and I’ll miss seeing him.  I first discovered him as a kid watching a strange but charming show called Evening Shade where he played Ponder Blue, a name that has always stuck with me.  If you ever get a chance to see the show on reruns or if it comes to DVD you should catch it.  It wasn’t great by any means but the people in it made it much better than it might have been with lesser actors.

Anyway, Ossie it is a shame to see you go.  You’ll be missed.
