Moulin Rouge - Movie Review

Moulin Rouge: A review of the first 15 minutes of the movie.
First impressions: This movie must be a blast if you are either really high or really gay. Either way, you are in for a treat. The colors are amazing, all aglow in their Technicolor glory. And best yet, it opens with a Bowie song: Nature Boy. Hell, the Bowie references don’t stop there. They call the dancing girls the “Diamond Dogs” and even perform a little of the song!
The movie seems to be full of lots of great music, lots of which came from the 70’s. Not a bad start to something that ultimately led to a never-ending barrage of the girly-group collaborative remake of Lady Marmalade that infected the airwaves via MTV.
But above all things I believe in love. The love I have for the silliness of this movie. I have no clue what the hell is going on. I can only imagine it will eventually explain itself towards the end.
Toulouse Lautrec is a great touch to this (that horny midget bastard) played by John Leguizamo. He was the best thing that came from France since, well… Pasteurization maybe? And about the best thing since then too, as we all hate France now, like the good Americans we are.
And anything that has Nicole Kidman in it gets my vote. She, like Sarah Silverman for Future is a gift to the silver screen. I do have to say that it is pretty amusing to see Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) singing and dancing around. I don’t remember that happening in the Cantina, but I’m sure Lucas will add it in a future edition of Star Wars when his estate starts to go out of style and has to upgrade to a newer Xanadu.
From my first look, this movie deserves a pile of Oscars. I don’t remember what it won, but it deserves more than it got as it can only get weirder and better from here. Moulin Rouge = Wizard of Oz on crack seen through a fisheye lens and written by an army of ‘special’ monkeys.
Bottom Line:

I give it 3 out of 5 Monkeys, plus two “mystery” monkeys as I don’t know how it ends but can only assume it ends wonderfully, for a total of 5 monkeys.
